The St. Luke's Neighbourhood Centre functions as a working alternative to traditional centres for people who experience mental health needs. It is home to a number of projects, a community centre and a church, always buzzing with activity. The arts project is widely acknowledged with a good reputation as an innovative project in the field of art and mental health operating since 1993. How St Lukes Art Project operates: management structure, aims and objectives:
• St Lukes Art Project Management Committee is a sub committee reporting to and under the auspices of St Lukes Parochial Church Council, which has charitable status, being constituted in law under Ecclesiastical Act. The Parochial Church Council elects its committee from members of the local parish and the local community annually. Aims • To manage a successful artist in residence scheme • To improve opportunities for local people (primarily from the Manchester area), particularly those who experience mental or emotional distress to participate in the arts • To build in participants a sense of self worth and belonging in the wider community • To develop skills and opportunities for learning and self development which result from participation in the arts • To contribute to the cultural life of the area and the city through high quality arts projects • To develop relationships as appropriate to the aims and objectives with National, local, statutory and voluntary organisations in health, education and the arts.
Objectives • Enable the artist or artists to work with local people using his or her particular artistic skills • Developing those skills as necessary through training and a proportion of time for developing his or her own art work • To work with people who experience mental or emotional distress • To support and develop the “pool arts” organisation • To run open art drop in sessions responding to participants needs • To run art projects as they arise from participants or the community and raise the funds to realise them • To liaise with other agencies where appropriate.
Participation in project
• St Lukes Art Project is open to adults who live in the Manchester Area. In particular, the project is aimed at those who experience mental or emotional distress including psychiatric illness. • The project operates an open door policy, so individuals can turn up to the open studio sessions and get involved immediately. We also encourage referrals from statutory and voluntary mental health projects and services. • The project will provide publicity about activities to promote the Art Project to the general public. |
