Destination Design was a project that combined a series of walking expeditions around Manchester, with learning about graphic design. Members of St Lukes Art Project worked with Rae Story and Annette Noar and were joined on some of the walks by The Ramblers! The idea was to identify a series of places that members of the group knew and liked and would share with their colleagues. The destinations included little known gems such as The Donkey Sanctuary in East Manchester, The old Ancoats Hospital and The Beauty Box ( a hair salon ) in Longsight with better known landmarks like Whitworth Park and The Big Wheel. The walks became information gathering exercises using photography and sketcthing as well as the discussions that take place when people get together and walk somewhere! On return to the studio, Annette Noar gave some background on design principals and helped participants to develop ideas for posters about their chosen destinations. People also learned to use Adobe Illustratpor and produced some brilliantly eye catching posters. We are hoping to display the posters and the research work in an exhibition later this year, and we'll also be producing postcards with maps of each destination... We would like to Thank Arts Council England North West for kindly funding this work and for The Ramblers for supporting the project. |

the new publication The Heart Starts Here is a bespoke hand bound hard backed book that documents the work of st lukes. People who use the art project, the community projects, the treatment room and the church itself have contributed their stories, interviews and images to this special book. Collated and designed by Rae Story, the book costs £10 (£5 to users of st lukes) and is a useful educational resource as well as a great read! |
